Origins and Growth of Christian Contemplative Prayer
with Dr Santha Bhattacharji

Dr Santha Bhattacharji (Senior Tutor, St Benet’s) leads this day on the origin and spread of the apophatic tradition of wordless contemplative prayer, looking at the shared origins of the tradition in Gregory of Nyssa and Denys the Areopagite; how the tradition moved westwards through Latin translations of Denys and the writings of the Victorines; and its flowering in C14th England in
The Cloud of Unknowing.

Saturday, 7 March, 10.30 a.m. – 4.00 p.m
Body, Mind and Spirit - Investigating Wholeness in the Western and Eastern Traditions
with Charles Hampton, Jessica Rose and Bishop Basil of Amphipolis

Charles Hampton works as a pastoral psychologist and trains Anglican and Baptist clergy. He will present Aquinas's view of being human, as mediated by the late Oxford Dominican Herbert McCabe. Jessica Rose is a writer and lecturer specialising in the interface between psychology and theology. In conversation with Charles, she will ask what the Western tradition can contribute to a contemporary understanding of wholeness. Bishop Basil of Amphipolis is a bishop of the Ecumenical Patriarchate and author of 'The Healing Word' (London: DLT 2008). He will draw on the thought of Dionysius the Areopagite and Maximus the Confessor for its implications for what human wholeness might mean in Eastern Orthodox theological tradition.
